Abstract of Paper I
ROLE OF IN-VITRO TOXICITY ASSAYS IN RASASASTRA
Dr.Sugeena.P., Dept. of Rasasastra & Bhaishajyakalpana, GAVC, TVM

In-vitro and in-vivo experiments play a major role in drug development. The researches that have been done on tissues or cell lines are termed as in-vitro studies.  In vitro toxicity testing is the scientific analysis of the effects of toxic chemical substances on cultured bacteria or mammalian cells. Many of the toxicologists believe that in-vitro tests can replace in-vivo animal models. There are different types of in-vitro toxicity assays and all of them measurethe percentage of viable cells in the cell culture plate.
In Ayurveda cell line studies and cytotoxicity assays are employed in different fields of researches. In Rasasastra, the processed mineral drugs and toxic herbs are used as therapeutic agents. So there is a greater concern about the safety of these drugs. Many of the physicians are reluctant to prescribe rasa medicines due to toxicity concerns. In the modern era, there is a necessity of evidence based experimental studies to prove the safety of rasa preparations.  In this paper, the role of in-vitro toxicity assays in screening the toxicity potential of a rasa formulation is discussed. The possibilities of using these kinds of assays and its limitations are also considered.

Abstract of Paper II

UTILITY OF GUDAVARTI IN CLINICAL MANAGEMENT- HORIZONS YET TO EXPLORE

Pharmaceutical modifications are essential tool of Ayurveda Bhaishajyakalpana. These make the formulation more patient friendly and will enhance their popularity. The major disadvantage in a pharmaceutical modification nowadays is reduced efficacy compared with the classical preparation. Thus it will be a difficult task to convert a formula to a modified form without losing its efficacy. Gudavarti is a classical solid dosage form that is limited its clinical utility to bowel evacuation. The need for an easier and safer option for ayurveda drug administration in children; especially in conditions like pyrexia is mounting now a days. The possibilities of developing a modified gudavarti having a systemic action lead to converting the time tested Amruthotharamkashaya yoga into an easy admissible form- gudavarthi or rectal suppository. The paper deals with the experimental study done on rabbits using this modified Amritotharam rectal suppository.
