TITLE  :- CONTEMPLATING THE PROSPECTS OF NUTRITIONAL TRENDS
                 WITH SPECIAL RESPECT TO NUTRACEUTICALS

              Nutrition may be defined as “the science of food and its relationship to health”. Nutrition can be classified into human nutrition, clinical nutrition, and public health nutrition; they deal with individual humans, therapeutic aspects and community aspects respectively. The term nutraceutical is combination of two words – nutrition and pharmaceutical. Nutraceutical product is a food or fortified food product that not only supplements the diet but also assists in treating or preventing disease, so provides medical benefits. It can be any product derived from food sources with extra health benefits in addition to the basic nutritional value found in foods. Nutraceuticals may be used to improve health, prevent chronic diseases, postpone the ageing process, or just support functions and integrity of the body. A wide range of nutraceuticals have been shown to impose crucial roles in immune status and susceptibility to certain disease states. There should be a balance between high energy and nutrient content required for growth and development and establishing a healthy diet with weight control in association with regular physical exercise. The diet for a child should be focussed on natural fresh sources of energy and nutrients while selection of ingredients in geriatric population should be different. Although the concept of nutraceuticals is gaining more popularity recently, its roots can be traced to the ancient Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda. Indian traditional recipes has a strong link with the dietetic rules of Ayurveda. Majority of the trends have originated as per the need of population and the environment in which they are living. And are designed to provide the nutritional needs of different population strata. A healthy diet should provide the body with essential nutrients and should lower the health risks. Providing such traditional recipes which are cost effective, easily available, procurable and conducive to the targeted population is the best alternative to the costly health supplements especially for a developing country like India in offering nutraceutical benefits either in preventive or curative manner. Proper knowledge of Ayurvedic dietetics and its application in our daily routine is essential for a healthy long life.
