                                                                        ABSTRACT

Samhitas are the prime documented source of knowledge on Ayurveda. These treatises are written in much condensed form, mostly sutra. There are various techniques described in the Samhita itself which are meant for the lucid and better understanding of the sutras. These include tantrayukti, arthashraya, kalpana, vyakhya and tacheelyadi. Tacheelyadi are the techniques of writing and understanding treatises. Tacheelyadi techniques are used to highlight the meaning of terms, to distinguish and align the apt meaning to the words which are equivalents, to line up the meaning of the word based on the context of application, to understand the untold part of a sentence etc.

Though tacheelyadi techniques are mentioned along with similar techniques in the samhitas like tantrayukti, it remains unexplored and less analysed in the understanding of sutras. Therefore the identification and analysis of tacheelyadi techniques in sutras need to be done for the benefit of learners in Ayurveda. Sutrasthana of Ashtanga Hridaya is selected for analysing the usage of tacheelyadi in it. Sutrasthana explains the basic principles of Ayurveda and is the first and most important sthana among the six sthanas. The information in Sutrasthana is in the form of general statements applicable to other sthanas also. Hence this study aims to analyse tacheelyadi techniques in Sutrasthana of Ashtanga Hridaya.

The study started with the identification and explanation of 17 tacheelya techniques mentioned in the Uttarasthana of Ashtanga Hridaya with Sarvanga Sundara commentary. Analysis of tacheelyadi techniques in 10 chapters out of 30 chapters were done. While analysing the usage of tacheelyadi in 10 chapters, the total frequency was found to be 303. Guniguna vibhava tacheelyadi was observed in all the 10 chapters. After completion of 30 chapters the compiled and the final data will be arranged systematically. This analysis of tacheelyadi techniques will help in identifying the extent of usage of composition techniques and also will aid in imparting deeper and less explored meanings of sutras.

                                                                        ABSTRACT

Ayurveda is the science of longevity which is based on agama, recorded in samhitas by acharyas who are epitomes of knowledge. Samhitas are texts in concise form where every small aphorism encompasses a vast meaning in a particular style. The ancient scholars of Ayurveda while writing a treatise adopted some unique methodologies in expressing their ideas and the learner should be acquainted with these methodologies to understand their ideas perfectly. The most important technique among them is Tantrayukti.

Ashtanga Sangraha of Acharya Vagbhata is a compiled text which explains all the branches of Ayurveda in a lucid manner so that it can be clearly understood. The aim of the study is to analyse the application of Tantrayukti in Chikitsasthana of Ashtanga Sangraha, to describe various aspects of the treatment principles mentioned in it.

The study started with the identification of 36 Tantrayukti mentioned by Indu in his Sasilekha commentary on Uthara sthana of Ashtanga Sangraha. Analysis of Tantrayukti in 10 chapters out of 24 chapters was done. Adhikarana, Padartha and Yoga are used in all sutras. Adhikarana, Yoga, Padartha, Hetwartha, Uddhesha, Pradesha, Vakyasesha, Prayojana, Atidesha, Prasanga, Ateetaveksha, Anagataveksha, Oohyam, Samucchayam, Niyoga and Vikalpa are used in almost 10 chapters. Depending on the nature of usage of Tantrayukti, it can be classified under the categories-methodological, analytical and interpretational. Among 36 Tantrayukti 50% are used in methodological aspect 41.67% in interpretational aspect and 33.33% in analytical aspect. After completion of 24 chapters the compiled and the final data will be arranged systematically. The study will help to improve the understanding of the text among Ayurvedic community in its real sense.
