Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Stress in adolescent girls results from a complex psychophysiological experience, causing mental health problems like anxiety, depression, behavioral disorders, and other somatic complaints, prevalent in 20-30% of the teenage population. The clinical study was designed to evaluate the effect of Thikthaka ghrita in Stress of adolescent girls of the age group 10-16 years. The study was carried out in Out Patient Department of Kaumarabhritya, Govt. Ayurveda college hospital for women and children, Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram. The trial drug Thikthaka ghrita, described in Ashtanga Hridaya , Chikitsa stana, Kusta chikitsitham chapter, is having drugs with thiktha rasa predominance, was given in adolescent girls, in a dose of 5ml in 10-13 years of age and 7.5ml in 14-16 years of age, twice daily, the first dose in the early morning and the second dose in the evening, one hour before food, with warm water as anupana, for a period of 60 days. Non- randomized Pre and Post Interventional methods were used as a study design, in a population of 30  participants , screened and assessed with Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-42 (DASS-42). Data were collected and statistically analyzed using Fisher’s exact test, Chi-Square Test, Karl Pearson’s correlation, and Spearman’s rank correlation. All parameters revealed statistical significance (p <0.01) of intervention which indicated the effect of Thikthaka ghrita in the management of Stress among adolescent girls.

ABSTRACT

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of unknown aetiology that results in inflammation and ulcers of colon and rectum. The primary symptoms of active disease are abdominal pain, diarrhea mixed with blood and mucus, tenesmus etc. and marked by alternating periods of exacerbations and remission.  Ulcerative colitis has evolved into a global burden given its high incidence in developed countries and the substantial increase in incidence in developing countries. In conventional western medicine some drugs like sulfasalazine may give mild relief in symptoms and signs but after sometime patients need more doses of the same drug. Some patients get benefit with steroids such as prednisone which again are not suitable because of their side-effects. Even after taking steroids and sulfasalazine drugs patients suffer from the disease. So the patients are always seeking some alternative therapy promising more effective and safer outcomes.

The present study focuses on invitro analysis of anti-inflammatory effect of Bhoonimbadi choornam in Ulcerative colitis DLD1 colorectal cells. Bhoonimbadi choornam mentioned in the context of visha atisara chikitsa (diarrhoea) under Vishopadrava pratisheda adyaya in Ashtanga Samgraha uthara sthana. Atisara has long been recognized as an important health problem in all age groups and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality.  The formulation contains 7 drugs such as Bhoonimba (Andrographis paniculata), Musta (Cyperus Rotundus), Katuka (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Trayanti (Bacopa monnieri), Indrayava (Holarrhena antidysenterica seed), Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica) and Kutaja twak (Holarrhena antidysenterica). The study evaluates the anti-inflammatory effect of Bhoonimbadi choornam on Lipopolysaccharide activated DLD1 colorectal cells by using inflammatory assays such as Cyclo oxygenase, Lipoxygenase, Myelo peroxidase, Cellular nitrite and Inducible Nitric oxide synthase and results of sample drug is compared with a standard anti-inflammatory drug Sulfasalazine currently used in the treatment of Ulcerative colitis.

ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is recognized as the most prevalent immune-mediated inflammatory disease, involving skin and joints and associated with abnormalities of other systems.  Palmoplantar psoriasis is a variant of psoriasis in which there are erythematous, scaly, indurated at times fissured, plaques localized to palms and soles. Though only small body surface area is affected but because of the discomfort produced, this site of involvement carries a definite significance. Palmoplantar psoriasis is such a disease which can’t be correlated exactly with any disease mentioned in Ayurveda but to a certain extent based on its symptoms it can be correlated with Vipadika, which is one of the type of Kshudrakushtha. It involves predominantly Vata and Kapha dosha and characterized by Pani-pada Sphutana(Fissure in palm and soles) and Teevra vedana (with severe pain).

It was an interventional study with a sample size of 27 which was conducted in the OPD of Agadatantra department, Poojappura campus, Government Ayurveda college Thiruvananthapuram in the age group of 20-60 years of both sexes. Subjects satisfying inclusion criteria was selected and details were recorded as per the case proforma. The selected lepa which is prepared out of Karanja taila added with Tankana were given twice daily externally and punarnavadi kashaya 48 ml twice daily one hour before food internally for a period of 30 days. Follow up was done after 14 days. Assessment were done before treatment, after treatment and after follow up with the aid of ESFI score. Results were analysed statistically.

ABSTRACT

Dyslipidemia is a contributing factor to the development of Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and its effective management is an important goal. Modern management has a wide range of pharmacological intervention but may produce side effects on prolonged use. Clinical studies reveal that herbal medicines have much effect in prevention and management of Dyslipidemia with minimal or no side effects. The present study is to find out the combined effect of a medicated Syamaka yavagu with life style modification in Dyslipidemia.

In this Interventional study, 60 participants who diagnosed with Dyslipidemia by using case proforma and laboratory investigations, satisfying inclusion and exclusion criteria will be selected. 30 participants each, will be randomly allocated to study group (Group A) and control group (Group B). The study group will be given medicated Syamaka yavagu and life style modifications for 30days while the control group was kept on lifestyle modification only, for 30 days. The responses will be assessed on objective parameters especially lipid profile before and after the study and after follow up of 30 days. The collected data will be analyzed accordingly.

ABSTRACT

Manuscript is a knowledge based hand written composition on palm leaf, birch bark, paper, cloth, metal, or any other materials, which has significant scientific, historical, philosophical or aesthetic value. India has an estimate of 10 million manuscripts, probably the largest collection in the world. These cover various subjects like Ayurveda, literature, philosophy etc. Among the Ayurveda manuscripts, a considerable amount remains unexplored and unpublished.  Hence it is necessary to explore and publish the valuable knowledge in these manuscripts.

The manuscript ‘Bheshajapaddhati’ written by Purushottama, which is preserved in Government Oriental Manuscript Library, Karyavattom was selected for this study. ‘Bheshajapaddhati’ comprises four khandas (chapters), namely Rogavichara khanda, Bheshajavikalpa khanda, Kriyabheda khanda and Upakrama khanda. The fourth khanda entitled, Upakrama khanda has been critically edited in Department of Samhita Samskrita and Sidhanta, Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. In the present study, remaining three khandas of ‘Bheshajapaddhati’ are selected for critical edition. Primary reading of these khandas revealed that, it deals with the description of doshas, diseases, properties of various dravyas and therapeutic procedures. Critical edition and English translation of these khandas will add up to the existing knowledge on the text and will lead to its completion.

The digitized copy of the source manuscript identified from Government Oriental Manuscript Library, Karyavattom and the manuscript having similarity in title, author and contents obtained from Government Sanskrit College Library, Thrippunithura were considered for critical edition. These manuscripts were analyzed for their mutual relationship. Then the critical edition of these khandas was carried out by following the methods of lower criticism. Finally the English translation of the text will be done.
