                                                                        ABSTRACT

Samhitas are the prime documented source of knowledge on Ayurveda. These treatises are written in much condensed form, mostly sutra. There are various techniques described in the Samhita itself which are meant for the lucid and better understanding of the sutras. These include tantrayukti, arthashraya, kalpana, vyakhya and tacheelyadi. Tacheelyadi are the techniques of writing and understanding treatises. Tacheelyadi techniques are used to highlight the meaning of terms, to distinguish and align the apt meaning to the words which are equivalents, to line up the meaning of the word based on the context of application, to understand the untold part of a sentence etc.

Though tacheelyadi techniques are mentioned along with similar techniques in the samhitas like tantrayukti, it remains unexplored and less analysed in the understanding of sutras. Therefore the identification and analysis of tacheelyadi techniques in sutras need to be done for the benefit of learners in Ayurveda. Sutrasthana of Ashtanga Hridaya is selected for analysing the usage of tacheelyadi in it. Sutrasthana explains the basic principles of Ayurveda and is the first and most important sthana among the six sthanas. The information in Sutrasthana is in the form of general statements applicable to other sthanas also. Hence this study aims to analyse tacheelyadi techniques in Sutrasthana of Ashtanga Hridaya.

The study started with the identification and explanation of 17 tacheelya techniques mentioned in the Uttarasthana of Ashtanga Hridaya with Sarvanga Sundara commentary. Analysis of tacheelyadi techniques in 10 chapters out of 30 chapters were done. While analysing the usage of tacheelyadi in 10 chapters, the total frequency was found to be 303. Guniguna vibhava tacheelyadi was observed in all the 10 chapters. After completion of 30 chapters the compiled and the final data will be arranged systematically. This analysis of tacheelyadi techniques will help in identifying the extent of usage of composition techniques and also will aid in imparting deeper and less explored meanings of sutras.
