                                                        ABSTRACT

Drug induced toxicity is a major health problem in the current scenario which limits the usefulness of widely used drugs. Cisplatin is one among the widely used chemo therapeutic agent which causes nephrotoxicity in approximately one third of the patients receiving it. Through this study we are aiming to provide relief to the patients who are on Cisplatin medication. For this, Drakshadi agada mentioned under the treatment of Mandali visha inSusruta Samhita

Kalpasthana Sarpadashtachikitsavijananeeyam chapter is selected. Mandali visha can be corelated with Viper envenomation by its signs and symptoms and mode of death. Viper venom is chiefly hemotoxic and death may occur due to acute renal failure. Therefore, the treatment modalities may target circulatory and renal system. Hence this study aims to prove the nephroprotective effect of Drakshadi agada to tackle the after effects of xenobiotics causing nephrotoxicity. This study also aims to compare the nephroprotective effect of Drakshadi agada with Nimbapatra agada which had proven nephroprotective activity. Physico-chemical evaluation of the formulation will be conducted at Drug Standardization Unit (DSU) Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. Before conducting clinical trial on humans, an animal experimental study is planned to conduct at Amala Cancer Research Centre, Thrissur for a period of 3 months. Wistar rats procured from authentic breeding centre will be divided into 7 groups of 6 animals each. The groups designed for the study are; normal, Cisplatin (10mg/kg body weight), Vehicle control along with Cisplatin, Drakshadi agada at high, medium and low doses along with Cisplatin (10mg/kg body weight), Nimbapatra agada standard dose along with Cisplatin. All the groups will receive their respective drugs for 14 days, except Cisplatin which is administered on 7th day. Changes in every animal will be observed each day and animals will be sacrificed at the end of 16th day. Cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity will be evaluated by histological examinations and biochemical analysis of kidney functions. Results will be statistically analyzed by ANOVA, followed by relevant post-hoc test. If the results are significant, the formulation Drakshadi agada can be further studied as a nephroprotective agent against those drugs which cause nephrotoxicity

ABSTRACT

Dyslipidemia is the imbalance of lipids such as elevation of total cholesterol or low density lipoprotein or both or low level of high density lipoprotein in circulating plasma1. It is one among the major metabolic risk factors for Coronary Heart Disease and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of dyslipidemia is very high around 79% in India especially in the age group in between 30-60 years around which requires urgent intervention strategies to prevent and manage this principal cardiovascular risk factors. Hence treating early borderline dyslipidemia is one of the key of success in prevention of atherosclerosis and CVD. Many Interventional trials were reported to have hypolipidemic action, giving temporary relief but cause long term undesirable effects4. Clinical importance of herbal drugs in the management of dyslipidemia has received considerable attention in recent years.

The study is aimed to explore the effect of Triphala kwatha with Yava Sakthu and Madhu as an adjunct to lifestyle modifications on borderline dyslipidemia. In Ayurveda, dyslipidemia can be correlated with Medodushti, a condition caused by derangement of agni. Elevated lipid profiles can be brought back to normal by kaphamedohara, deepana, rookshana and lekhana drugs.

A Quasi experimental study is conducted in 60 participants of all sexes, satisfying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Out of 60 participants, 30 each are consecutively selected and allocated alternately to study group and control group. The study group was given 48ml Triphala kwatha with 6 g Yava sakthu and 6g Madhu twice daily one hour before food with life style modifications for 90 days while the control group was kept on lifestyle modifications alone .The outcome measurements is analysed through serum lipid profile investigations on 0th , 45th and 90th day. Conclusions made accordingly by using suitable statistical analysis by paired t test and student t test.

ABSTRACT

A Chronic ulcer may be defined as one that fails to heal in the expected time for a ulcer of that type, which is usually less than 3 weeks [1]. Chronic ulcers usually respond slowly to conventional treatments. In Ayurveda classics ,ulcers its types and management has been explained. Signs and symptoms of non-healing ulcers can be compared with features of Dushtavrana.Susruta Samhita Chikitsa stana 1st chapter explains 60 methods of treatment of ulcers and dhoopana is one among them. In Susruta Samhita Sutrastana Misrakadhyaya, drugs have been mentioned for vrana dhoopana like -Sriveshtaka, Sarjarasa, Sarala, Devadaru, Saara vrikshas like asana, khadira. The aim of the study is to evaluate analgesic and antimicrobial effect of this vrana dhoopana yoga in non-healing ulcer. Dhoopana will be done for 7 days, twice a day, for 10 minutes each. This is a single group Pre and Post interventional study; sampling method is consecutive sampling and the sample size is 27. Patients of age group 30-60years having non- healing ulcers are taken irrespective of gender from OPD and IPD of the Department of Shalyatantra, Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, satisfying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results will be analysed statistically after the study.
