ABSTRACT

Irritable bowel syndrome is the functional disorder of intestine characterized by alteration of  the bowel habits and abdominal pain in the absence of any detectable organic pathology. It is generally believed that most patients develop symptoms in response to psychosocial factors, altered gastrointestinal motility, altered visceral sensation or luminal factors. IBS being the most prevalent digestive disease, accounts for frequent absenteeism from work and impaired quality of life. The cardinal features of Grahani roga explained in classical textbooks of Ayurveda have similarities with clinical features of Irritable Bowel Syndrome explained in Western medicine. Grahani roga represents a group of disorder of digestive system caused by impairment of Agni.

The study ‘Effect of a selected Ayurvedic treatment modality in Irritable Bowel Syndrome’ is to evaluate the effect of treatment modality in  IBS, with a maximum time period of 40 days  at Govt.Ayurveda College Hospital ,Thiruvananthapuram. In this study  patients will be selected and assigned under a single  group by confirming Rome IV criteria. The intervention includes administering Mustakaranjadi kashayam as deepana pachana oushadha followed by Vicharana snehapanam with Dadimadi Ghritha, Abhyanga with Thila thaila and ushnambu snanam, Virechana with Avipathi choorna followed by peyadi krama. The dosage of snehapana and virechana will be fixed on the basis of bala, koshta and agni of the patient. Results will be statistically analysed at the end of study period.

ABSTRACT

The essential features of Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD) are persistent impairment in reciprocal social communication and interaction and restricted, patterns of behaviour or interests. Failure to meet the language development milestones is one of the earliest red flags of Autism. There will be language delay; regression or loss of use of speech. Receptive language often lags behind expressive language in ASD.  At one end, there are children with Autism whose vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, and articulation skills are within the normal range of functioning, while at the other end, a significant proportion of the population remains essentially nonverbal. Marked changes can be observed if ayurvedic formulations that can stimulate the language areas of the brain can be given to such children.

A clinical study is designed to evaluate the effect of Kalyanaka Avaleha Choorna in a dose of 3 gm, twice daily, after food, with ghrita in language impairment of children with autism aged 3-6 years for a period of 60 days. The formulation Kalyanaka Avaleha Choorna is explained in the Bhaishajya Ratnavali- Swarabheda Chikitsa and Vatavyadhi Chikitsa and also Chakradatha –Vatavyadhi Chikitsa.

The study is conducted as an Interventional assignment with Pre and Post-test. Children of both sex of the age group 3-6 years having qualitative impairment in the areas of language development or communication skills, social interactions, and reciprocity satisfying the DSM – 5 attending the OPD of Kaumarabhritya will be selected for the study. Assessment for Autism is done using the tool CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale) & language age evaluation is done using the tool Receptive-Expressive Emergent Language Scale (REELS) by a Speech and language pathologist. Both assessments will be taken before and after the study. A Further assessment will be done after 1 month of follow-up period. Data will be analysed using paired t test.

                                                     ABSTRACT

Chronic diseases have become a major cause of global morbidity and mortality. The increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progressing to an end-stage renal disease and the consequent financial burden of renal replacement therapy has become a major problem in society. As there is lack of effective nephroprotective drugs in modern medicine, there is a scope of validating traditional medicine especially Ayurvedic drugs with nephroprotective potential. Ardhavilwa yogam an indigenous herbal formulation quoted in Sahasrayogam is a promising drug combination with possible nephroprotective effect. Ardhavilwa yogam contains Chukku: Sanskrit - Sunthi (Zingiber officinale),Chunda:Sanskrit -Brihati (Solanum torvum) , Kadaladi: Sanskrit -Apamarga ( Achyranthes apsera ) , Kodituva : Sanskrit –Dusparsha (Tragia involucrate) and Tazhutama : Sanskrit-Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa ). It is indicated in sopha, a condition characterized by generalized edema. As generalized edema is major sign of renal failure mainly due to nephrotic syndrome this formulation may have positive benefits. Moreover some studies have proved the nephroprotective effects of ingredients of this formulation, but the synergetic effect is not yet proven.

The nephroprotective activity of formulation Ardhavilwa yogam will be studied in gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in male Albino rats. Six groups of rats ,six in each group is taken for the study.Group 1will be normal control group, group 2 given gentamicin only ,group 3 given silymarin as standard drug along with gentamicin, group 4&  5 will be given the study drug Ardhavilwa yogam in decoction form in effective and double dose along with gentamicin, &group 6  will be given hydro alcoholic extract of study drug  with gentamicin for 8  days. The gentamicin injection will be given as i.p  after one hour of drug administration and animals are kept in metabolic cage. On 9th day the animals will be sacrificed and nephroprotective effect of Ardhavilwa yogam will be evaluated by histological examinations and biochemical analysis of kidney functions. Anti -oxidant activity of the formulation will be determined by in vitro methods . Results will be statistically analysed by ANOVA.

ABSTRACT

In the current scenario, incidence of skin diseases is increasing irrespective of age and sex. Skin being an index of one’s physical and mental health, any diseases affecting it will be a serious concern for that person. As skin is an important interface between man and his environment, any external factors that affect human body has a primary contact with the skin itself. Contact Dermatitis is an inflammatory eczematous skin disease caused by chemicals or metal ions that exert toxic effects without inducing a T-cell response (contact irritants) or by small reactive chemicals that modify proteins and induce innate and adaptive immune responses (contact allergens). Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed (type IV) hypersensitivity reaction to exogenous contact antigens. Immunological responses produced in this are due to the interaction of cytokines and T cells. Common etiological allergens for Allergic contact dermatitis are nickel, chromium, formaldehyde, fragrance mix, poison Ivy, poison oak, rubber, cosmetics, fabrics and clothings, detergents, solvents etc. Use of Steroids is found to be the major Treatment in this condition.  In Ayurveda, signs and symptoms of contact with poisoned articles and food substances mentioned by Acharya Susrutha are strikingly similar to Contact Dermatitis. VishaghnaDasaimani is a group of 10 drugs enlisted by Acharya Charaka in his treatise CharakaSamhitha . As it is assumed that Allergic Contact Dermatitis can be discussed under the topic Visha in Ayurveda, VishaghnaDasaimani is taken for Lepa and Kshalana in this study to evaluate its action on the same disease. Along with this, PatoladiGana Kashaya, mentioned by Acharya Vagbhata in his treatise Ashtanga Hrdaya is advised for oral administration, as it is also having  vishahara property. To evaluate the effect of VishaghnaDasaimanigana along with PatoladiGana Kashaya in Allergic Contact Dermatitis, a sample of 30 participants with age group between 18-70 years, fulfilling the inclusion- exclusion criteria and assessment criteria arriving at OPD of Dept. of Agadatantra, Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram are being selected. Trial drug is being given for a period of 14 days. Data will be collected before and after treatment, scored and statistically analysed using ANOVA.
