ABSTRACT

The knowledge and wisdom earned by ancient seers of Ᾱyurveda were passed down to generations through handwritten documents called manuscripts. Manuscripts are the proof of our well-developed ancient sciences. Indian medical literature has the richest collection of written documents, texts and scripts. These written documents deliver information on the presence of different civilizations and emphasis the importance of their persistence. Thousands of valuable unpublished Ᾱyurveda manuscripts are available in manuscript libraries and private custodies which can incredibly contribute in the progress of Ᾱyurveda.

As an effort in this regard, Pryōgasārōttarapaṭalam, a manuscript which is scribed by Peruvanat Puṣpōt Nārāyaṇa Nambiār was collected from Government Sanskrit College, Ernakulam for critical edition and translation. The manuscript consists of 27 paṭala where the present study focus on first three paṭala- Santānasidhi, Garbharakṣa and Bālarakṣa. Objective of the study was critical edition, transliteration and translation of first three chapters of the manuscript Prayōgasārōttarapaṭalam.

Two manuscripts having similarity in title and content are considered for critical edition based on omissions, emendations, conjectural meaning, orthographic confusion and additions. As the available manuscripts are in old Malayalam script and Sanskrit language, after critical edition transliteration to Sanskrit was done followed by translation of first three chapters. The unique aspect of the manuscript is that it deals with the subject in a very concise manner and picked the best yōgās from different classics for the treatment of various diseases and presented yōgās in a simple and brief manner.

DISSERTATION TITLE: EFFECT OF VIDARYADI VAJIKARANA YOGA IN OLIGOZOOSPERMIA IN MEN OF 22-45 YEARS

ABSTRACT

Infertility is a disease of the male or female reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse. Estimates suggest that between 48 million couples and 186 million individuals live with infertility globally.50 percent of causes are due to Male factor. Low sperm production, blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm, abnormal sperm function, illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, environmental factors, lifestyle choices and other factors may contribute to male infertility.

Oligozoospermia is defined as decreased number of sperm in the ejaculate (< 15 million sperm/mL). Over a period of 30 years there is a decline of 30% of sperm count in South India. Availability, quality of interventions, access to address infertility remain as a real challenge in most countries. Current treatment modalities like IVF with ICSI,IUI,Hormonal treatment,Artificial donor sperm insemination are still largely unaffordable, unavailable and inaccessible in many parts of the world, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Ayurvedic therapy has been widely used in the management of male infertility as natural, effective, safe and cost effective method.Vidaryadi Vajikarana yoga mentioned in Ashtanga hrudayam Uttarasthanam is selected to study its effect in oligozoospermia within the age group 22-45 years. It is an interventional single group with pre-post study having sample size of 20.In this study, the participants satisfying the selected criteria with a complaint of oligozoospermia in at least two semen analyses from OPD R&B Department  Govt Ayurveda college, Trivandrum will be selected. Partcipants will be giving Vidaryadi Vajikarana yoga in a dose 12 g daily followed by milk, before food for a continuous period of 90 days. The primary outcome measure is the sperm concentration. It will be analyzed before and after treatment.Further statistical analysis will be done using suitable statistical measures. If the treatment modality is beneficial,it can be effectively used in practice and will be significant one in the management of Oligozoospermia.

ABSTRACT

Infertility is included under non communicable diseases, which possess significant physical, psychological, social and financial burden on the couples who are affected with the same. Among the factors causing infertility endometrial abnormalities plays an important role. Endometrium is important as a receptive endometrium with an adequate thickness of minimum 7 mm is essential for the implantation of blastocyst. Low endometrial thickness is one of the most important challenging factor, even Artificial Reproductive Techniques (ART) like IVF fails if the endometrium is not supportive for proper implantation resulting in either infertility or early pregnancy loss. In contemporary system hormonal therapies and invasive procedures are used for treating infertility. Many of these have found to be less effective. Majority of patients could not afford the cost of these artificial reproductive techniques. In Ayurveda there is no direct correlation of thin endometrium. Increased rooksha guna of vata, ushna teekshna guna of pitha along with dhatvagnimandya resulting in arthava dhatu kshaya leads to thin endometrium, ultimately results in vandyathwam. Ayurveda therapy has been widely used in the management of female infertility as an effective, natural, safe, and cost-effective method. This study is conducted to evaluate the effect of Dhatryadi Ghrita in improving thin endometrium in female infertility. Study design is pre and post interventional study with sample size 15. Participants of the study are infertile females who are diagnosed with thin endometrium satisfying the selection criteria of endometrial thickness (7 mm & less than 7 mm) around ovulation. Prepared medicine will be dispensed through OPD in 200ml container and instructions will be given to use daily 24 ml of two equal divided dose in morning and evening with hot water as anupana for 90 days. Results will be analysed at the end of treatment by follicular study up to the time of ovulation.
