ABSTRACT

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder with an autoimmune pathology affecting variety of body systems primarily the joints. It affects the lining of joints, causing painful swelling that can eventually result in bone erosion and deformity. Due to similar presentations Rheumatoid arthritis can be correlated with Amavata mentioned in our classics.

In Ayurveda principles of treatment of amavata are langhana, swedana and drugs having tikta, katurasa, deepana, virechana, snehapana and vasti. Vasthi karma is the best therapy to treat all the vatavyadhi . In pain and swelling of Rheumatoid arthritis nirooha vasthi which have the agni deepana , pachaka, vatakaphahara and shoola sothahara properties are essential , Rasnadi vasthi mentioned by chakrapani commentary on charaka Samhitha is one among them.

Objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Rasnadi vasthi administered continuously for 7 days in Rheumatoid arthritis patients. The study will be a before and after study. Participants of both sex aged 30 to 60 registered in IPD of Government Ayurveda Panchakarma Hospital, Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram diagnosed to have Rheumatoid arthritis and satisfying inclusion criteria will be selected. The base line data will be collected through interview, observation and questionnaire. After collecting base line data, detailed history and examination will be done using clinical case proforma.

A total of 20 participants will be selected by consecutive sampling and Rasnadi vasthi will be done continuously for 7 days. The participants will be assessed before and after the intervention (ie, on 0th, 8th Days) with regards to changes in DAS 28 Scale and VAS. Data will be Statistically Analysed and Presented.

                                                              ABSTRACT

Everyone experiences sadness and unhappiness at some point in their lives. Clinical depression, however, is more intense and of longer duration than typical sadness or grief, which interferes with a person’s ability to engage in daily activities. Depression has a greater impact on community than many physical illnesses. It is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease. Ayurveda provides rational means for the treatment of many physical and mental disorders which are considered to be obstinate and incurable in other systems of medicine. In Ayurveda perspective, Depression can be explained under Kaphaja unmada. Vishwaadi choornam (Harita Samhita Unmada Chikitsa) has 10 drugs in it. The primary aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of Vishwaadi choornam in reducing the signs and symptoms of Depression.

It is an interventional study – pre and post without control group. Male and female patients of the age group 20 – 60 years attending the OPD of Department of Kayachikitsa, Government Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram, who were diagnosed cases of Depression based on ICD 10 Criteria will be included in the study. They will be subjected to detailed clinical evaluation and the data will be recorded. The study will be conducted in a single group. Participants will be given Vishwaadi choornam, 6gm mixed with ghee, twice daily half an hour before food for a period of 60 days. Patients will be encouraged for regular visit at OPD at an interval of 15 days for uninterrupted feedback. 30 packets will be given each time (for 15 days) and a total of 120 packets will be given to the patient during study period. The clinical assessment will be done on 0th and 61st day using Hamilton rating scale for Depression. The result obtained will be recorded and statistically analyzed.

Abstract

Breast milk is the prime source of nourishment to a newborn baby. It improves the physical as well as mental strength and immunity of the baby. In Ayurveda, unique concept of sthanya dushti or milk vitiation has been described in which mother’s food and activities affect the quantity and quality of the milk. The unwholesome diet and lifestyle habits of the mother leads to vitiation of breast milk and produces various diseases in the baby. It shows that not only the treatment of baby is enough but also the treatment of vitiated breast milk is equally important as it being the cause for morbidities in infants. In Ayurveda certain herbs and formulations are specifically indicated for detoxifying the breast milk and improve the quality of milk and there by the growth of baby along with liberation from symptoms caused due to vitiation. Acharyas Vagbhata and Sushrutha have mentioned about Vachadigana as Sthanya sodhanagana. On analyzing the ingredients of the gana, it can be used in kapha dosha pradhana sthanya dusthi. This clinical study will be conducted on the lactating mothers of infants presenting with morbidities seeking treatment under the OPD of Dept of Kaumarabhritya and Well Baby Clinic of Govt Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. The study consists of two parts. In the first part, the effect of vachadi gana Kashaya given for a period of 7 days in diagnosed cases with Kapha vitiated breast milk will be measured by qualitative and quantitative breast milk analysis methods. In the second part, the effect of Vachadi Gana Kashaya in modifying the morbidity status of infants as measured by subjective symptomatic grading. The whole sample consists of 20 subjects. Vachadi gana Kashaya in the dose of 96 ml twice daily as Phanta Kashaya will be given to the study group for a period of 7 days.

                                                                         ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder resulting from a defect in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Insulin deficiency in turn leads to chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1 (requiring insulin for survival) and type 2 (may or may not require insulin for metabolic control). Diabetes is a major health issue that has reached alarming levels today and nearly half a billion people are living with diabetes worldwide. The prevalence of Diabetes in India is 8.9%. Kerala is the diabetic capital of India with a prevalence of diabetes as high as 20% i.e. more than double the national average. Diabetes can be correlated with Prameha in Ayurveda, there are many formulations mentioned in Ayurvedic classics and they are found to have significant hypoglycemic effect. The study drug is a polyherbal formulation containing Nimba ,Ushira , Amalaki  and Haritaki, mentioned in one of the classical ayurveda texts chakradutta in the chapter of treatment of prameha. The objective of the study is to evaluate the hypoglycemic effect of Nimbadi yogam as an add-on medication in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with inadequate glycemic control on conventional oral hypoglycemic agent Metformin alone. The study is interventional type. Both male and female subjects of age group 25-70 years with FBS level from 126-180 mg/dl, PPBS level from 200-250 mg/dl ,HbA1c level from 6.5%- 8.5% and taking Metformin monotherapy, attending OPD of Govt. Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram were selected for the study. Subjects with major systemic illness and complications were excluded. The study population was divided into two groups as experimental and control groups. In this study Nimbadi yogam was dispensed in a potentiated form in which choorna of four drugs will be powdered and potentiated in the decoction of these four drugs and the resultant powder was made into 500 mg tablets. The tablet was dispensed to the subjects of experimental group along with nishakadakadhi tarpana kwatha and the control group was administered Nisakathakadi tarpana kwatha alone. The subjects of experimental group was advised to take 2 tablets thrice daily before food along with Nisakathakadi tarpana kwatha for a period of 90 days with the stable dose of Metformin. The required laboratory investigations were done before and after the study period. The study is ongoing and the collected data will be subjected to statistical analysis using appropriate statistical techniques. Results will be drawn, summarized and conclusions will be made.
