ABSTRACT

The knowledge and wisdom earned by ancient seers of Ᾱyurveda were passed down to generations through handwritten documents called manuscripts. Manuscripts are the proof of our well-developed ancient sciences. Indian medical literature has the richest collection of written documents, texts and scripts. These written documents deliver information on the presence of different civilizations and emphasis the importance of their persistence. Thousands of valuable unpublished Ᾱyurveda manuscripts are available in manuscript libraries and private custodies which can incredibly contribute in the progress of Ᾱyurveda.

As an effort in this regard, Pryōgasārōttarapaṭalam, a manuscript which is scribed by Peruvanat Puṣpōt Nārāyaṇa Nambiār was collected from Government Sanskrit College, Ernakulam for critical edition and translation. The manuscript consists of 27 paṭala where the present study focus on first three paṭala- Santānasidhi, Garbharakṣa and Bālarakṣa. Objective of the study was critical edition, transliteration and translation of first three chapters of the manuscript Prayōgasārōttarapaṭalam.

Two manuscripts having similarity in title and content are considered for critical edition based on omissions, emendations, conjectural meaning, orthographic confusion and additions. As the available manuscripts are in old Malayalam script and Sanskrit language, after critical edition transliteration to Sanskrit was done followed by translation of first three chapters. The unique aspect of the manuscript is that it deals with the subject in a very concise manner and picked the best yōgās from different classics for the treatment of various diseases and presented yōgās in a simple and brief manner.

ABSTRACT

Most of the ancient Ayurvedic Sanskrit classical texts are written in concise forms throughwhich immense knowledge are conveyed and implemented. The authors have used manyfundamental tools and methodologies such as tantrayukthi, taccheelyadi, arthasraya etc. formaking logical conclusions of these concise sutras. A reader well versed with these techniques can make a proper analysis and interpretation of the sutras. Arthasraya is a technique or systematic approach adopted for precise composition and correct interpretation of tantra. ‘Artha’ means meaning and ‘asraya’ means dependence, thus Arthasraya means substrates of meaning. Arthasraya, which are 20 in number, are part of Samhita adhyayana and is important in understanding and critical analysis of sutras of ancient texts which pave way for deeper knowledge of these texts. Charaka Samhita is one of the oldest and the most important ancient authoritative writings on Ayurveda. The treatise consists of eight sthanas, among them Sutrasthana expounds main principles of the entire text. Because of the compilation of fundamental principles concerned with various aspects of Ayurveda, this is known as slokasthana. All the important siddhanta and related theories are given in a concise manner which can be amplified by the application of Arthasraya techniques. Therefore, this study is with an objective to analyse the extent of application of Arthasraya techniques in Sutrasthana of Charaka Samhita. The study started with a detailed analysis of 20 Arthasraya mentioned in Arunadatta commentary of Ashtanga Hridaya, Uttarasthana. Sutrasthana of Charaka Samhita was thoroughly read analysing every slokas to identify the usage of Arthasraya techniques. Categorisation of Arthasraya into certain domains like Linguistics, Cause-effect relationship, Cross reference and Tantrayukthi have been done. Proportion of usage of Linguistic domain was found to be 55%, Cause-effect relationship-10%, Cross reference-15% and Tantrayukthi-100%. The percentage analysis of usage of Arthasraya in all 30 chapters of Sutrasthana have also been done. The data were compiled based on the expert opinion of Samhita Samskrita and Siddhanta Department and the final data were arranged systematically. This study will be beneficial for Ayurvedic community especially to learners aspiring deeper insights in Charaka Samhita Sutrasthana.
